It was an emotional day for five seniors playing their final regular season game at the Newton Campus Field. Co-captain Laina Ceddia, Erin Docherty, Elyse Meredith, Caity Stevens and Kristin Goddard went out in spectacular fashion, defeating BIG EAST rival Syracuse, 2-0.
BC finishes the conference schedule as one of the league's top-four teams, and will host a quarterfinal match in the BIG EAST Tournament when postseason play begins next weekend.
The No. 23 Eagles (12-5-0, 7-3-0) benefited from a dominating defensive effort, holding the Orange (8-8-2, 2-7-1) without a shot for the entire match. Goalkeepers Kate Taylor and Meredith combined for BC's eighth shutout of the season.
Boston College freshman Tara Luciani notched the game-winner in the contest's sixth minute after gaining control of a through-ball from Ceddia. It was the fifth goal of the season for Luciani and third assist for Ceddia.
Freshman Kia McNeill added an insurance goal midway through the opening half, scoring off a Syracuse deflection in the 29th minute to make the score 2-0. McNeill registered six shots in the contest and leads the Eagles with eight goals.
Syracuse senior goalkeeper Shannon Myers was impressive against a BC offense that took 15 shots. Myers notched three saves and was active on the outside of the box throughout the afternoon.
Boston College will play its final regular season game on Wednesday afternoon at Central Connecticut.
