Two first-half goals gave the Eagles an early lead and the defense held St. John's scoreless in the second half to give BC its 11th win of the year at a chilly Newton Campus Soccer Field.
The win locked up a top-four finish in the BIG EAST for the Eagles (11-5-0, 6-3-0 BIG EAST) and home field in the BIG EAST tournament quarterfinals next weekend.
Boston College struck first at 34:29 when a shot by sophomore Jenny Maurer sailed over St. John's keeper Jaime Beran's head. After a defensive battle just outside the 18-yard box, Maurer settled the ball and hooked it over Beran's head for the goal. The Eagles added to their lead six minutes later, when senior Laina Ceddia sent a cross from the left endline to Nicole Reyes, who was wide open in front of the net for the 2-0 lead.
St. John's (9-7-1, 3-6-0 BIG EAST) cut the deficit in half when the Red Storm scored their only goal of the game at 42:32. Holly Ryder's shot from above the 18-yard box hit the left post and bounced across the goal to an open Laura Burlacu who drove the ball off Kate Taylor into the back of the net.
In the early minutes of the second half, Boston College put together another solid attack, but a shot by Tara Luciani was saved by Beran and an attempt by Jenny Maurer sailed just high of the net.
The Eagles defense allowed just three shots in the second half and only one on net, which Kate Taylor saved, giving her three saves for the game.
Despite all their efforts, the Red Storm could not bring the ball down field to attempt a game-tying shot late. The Eagles sealed the victory when Kia McNeill netted a goal off a corner kick at 88:08.
The Eagles conclude their regular season home schedule and their BIG EAST schedule when they host Syracuse on Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. Before the game, BC seniors will be honored.
