Two first-half goals by freshman Tara Luciani boosted Boston College to a 4-0 victory over the Providence College Friars. The victory lifts BC to a 10-4-0 mark on the season. The Eagles improve to 5-2-0 in the BIG EAST. The loss drops Providence to 4-11-0 and 1-7-0 in league action. The win is BC's fourth straight shutout.
The Eagles got on the board in the fourth minute to set the tone of the game. An extraordinary effort by senior midfielder Laina Ceddia earned BC its first corner kick of the evening. Heather Ferron took the corner and hit a nice ball into the box.
Maddie Johnson elevated and headed it to Tara Luciani who was waiting inside the six-yard box. Luciani got her right foot on it and put it in the top corner of the net.
Luciani struck again in the 23rd minute when she found the ball outside the 18-yard box. She pushed right and fended off the opposing sweeper. A quick release shot beat Providence keeper Ashley Fedyshyn and increased BC's lead to 2-0.
Kia McNeill joined Luciani in the scoring column at the 27 minute mark. Johnson pushed the ball up the left side and served a nice ball into McNeill inside the six-yard box. McNeill redirected her pass with her left foot and put it by Fedyshyn. That was Johnson's second assist of the evening and Kia's sixth goal of the season.
At the conclusion of the first half of play, BC led 3-0 and put up 12 shots. Providence got off one shot in the half.
The second half was quiet on both fronts until the 75th minute. After a struggle for the ball in front of the net, Ceddia toed a ball to junior forward Katie McGregor. McGregor got a good foot on it and the ball went through Fedyshyn's hands for BC's fourth goal.
Final stats were similar to those of the first half. BC's barrage of shots did not falter in the second half as the Eagles' final tally was 24. Providence mustered three in the contest.
BC goalkeeper Kate Taylor made 1 save in the winning effort. Providence keeper Ashley Fedyshyn made eight saves despite taking the loss.
BC travels to South Bend, Indiana on Saturday for a 7:30 contest against Notre Dame. The Fighting Irish are currently #1 in the NSCAA National Poll and the game can be tracked live on "GameTracker;" accessible by clicking on "2004 Schedule."
