Chestnut Hill, Mass. - Sophomore forward Patrick Eaves scored two goals and junior goaltender Matti Kaltiainen made 14 saves to lead second-ranked Boston College to a 4-0 Hockey East victory over Providence before 6,428 fans in Kelley Rink.
For Kaltiainen, the game marked his second shutout of the season and fourth of his career.
With the victory, Boston College extended its winning streak to six games.
Boston College (19-3-3, 12-1-2 Hockey East) scored two goals in the first period and two goals in the third period to earn the win. Eaves opened the scoring at 3:24. Junior defenseman John Adams found Stephen Gionta behind the net. Gionta wheeled around in front of the goal and dished it off to Eaves, who beat Providence goalie David Cacciola. Sophomore defenseman Peter Harrold doubled the BC lead at 7:42, scoring a goal set up by senior Ty Hennes and junior Ryan Murphy.
After a scoreless second period, Eaves struck again at 4:14 of the final period. Stephen Gionta and Andrew Alberts set up Eaves to put the Eagles on top, 3-0. Junior Dave Spina finished the scoring with a short-handed goal at 12:52.
Boston College outshot Providence, 33-14, including a 13-3 shot advantage in the opening period. Cacciola made 29 saves in the loss.
With the loss, Providence's record dropped to 10-9-6 overall, 2-8-5 in Hockey East action.
Boston College will be back in action on Monday, February 2 at Boston's FleetCenter for the opening round of the 52nd Annual Beanpot. The Eagles will take on Harvard at 8 p.m. on NESN locally and on College Sports Television nationwide.
