CHESTNUT HILL, MASS. - Boston College has extended the contract of head women's basketball coach Cathy Inglese through the 2007-08 season, according to an announcement made by Director of Athletics Gene DeFilippo.
"Cathy has done an outstanding job with our women's basketball program and I'm thrilled that she will remain here at Boston College for a long time to come," says DeFilippo.
Inglese has compiled an overall record of 291-196 over 17 seasons of coaching, including a 171-122 mark in 10 seasons at Boston College. During her time at the Heights, she has led the Eagles to four NCAA tournaments, including the last two. Her teams have collected 20 or more wins in five of the last six seasons. This past winter, the Eagles registered one of their most successful seasons, finishing with a 22-9 record (12-4 BIG EAST) and advancing to the program's first-ever NCAA Sweet Sixteen.
During her coaching career, Inglese has been named conference coach of the year four times by two different conferences. In 1998-99, she was named BIG EAST Coach of the Year after her squad posted a 22-8 record and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
"I am very pleased with the support and confidence that Father Leahy and Gene DeFilippo have provided to me and to our program," says Inglese. "I am looking forward to leading the Boston College women's basketball team in our quest for academic and athletic excellence."
Inglese arrived at Boston College in 1993 after serving as the head coach at the University of Vermont for seven seasons. During that time, her Catamount teams were undefeated in regular-season play in both 1991-92 (29-0) and 1992-93 (28-0). In her seven years, she was named North Atlantic Conference Coach of the Year three times.
A native of Connecticut and a 1980 magna cum laude graduate of Southern Connecticut State College, Inglese played both basketball and softball for the school, which later inducted her into its hall of fame. She began her coaching career in 1980 with a job at Glastonbury High School and, in 1983, took her first collegiate coaching job as an assistant at University of New Hampshire.
