KINGSTON, R.I. - The New England Basketball Hall of Fame has announced its 2003 Class, which will be inducted on September 19 in the Ryan Center on the campus of the University of Rhode Island. Among the inductees is Boston College women's basketball head coach Cathy Inglese.
Inglese is one of 26 inductees in the second class to be enshrined in the Rhode Island hall. The 2003 class includes 11 former players, six coaching greats, three championship teams, and six contributors to the sport of basketball, all of which have made an impact on the face of New England basketball.
"Our most important objective was to honor a wide variety of individuals and teams whose contributions have been vital to the New England basketball story," said Dan Doyle, founder and executive director of the Institute for International Sport at the University of Rhode Island. "This class of inductees is every bit as compelling as the first class. One of the best parts of this project is being able to tell people of their selection."
Inglese's impact on New England basketball has been felt in two different collegiate programs. She has compiled a 291-196 overall record in 17 years of coaching. In her 11th season at the helm of the Eagles, she will enter the 2003-04 season with a 171-122 record. Prior to that, she was head coach at University of Vermont, where she amassed a 120-74 record in seven years, including back-to-back undefeated regular seasons (1991-92 and 1992-93).
Inglese has been named conference coach of the year four times, by two different leagues. She is also a three-time finalist for National Coach of the Year. In addition, Inglese has been inducted into six different basketball halls of fame.
The all-day induction celebration will begin with a celebrity golf tournament at 9:00 am at Beaver River Country Club in Richmond, R.I. The Induction activities will begin with a cocktail reception at the Institute for International Sport before moving to the Ryan Center for the dinner reception, silent auction, and Induction Ceremony. Last year's events drew nearly 1000 people. Tickets for the events are available by calling 401-874-2375.
