Track And Field Teams Complete First Day At Penn Relays

PHILADELPHIA - Junior Jennifer Donovan (Melville, N.Y.) and senior Brian Mahoney (Weymouth, Mass.) achieved NCAA Regional qualifying marks in the 3,000-meter steeplechase - Donovan in championship-winning and record-setting fashion - while sophomore pole vaulters Megan Mara (Avon, Conn.) and Saki Sugano (Bellevue, Wash.) established school records Thursday, April 24 at the Penn Relays.
Donovan won the 3,000 steeplechase in the college women's division with a time of 10:18.88, besting her own Boston College record of 10:35.23, which she set at last year's ECAC Championships.
Mahoney crossed the finish line in 9:09.93, good for a seventh-place finish in the men's Olympic Development race. Winning the event was Eagles assistant coach John Mortimer, who completed the course in 8:51.24.
Mara and Sugano both cleared 11-9 ?, breaking the old standard of 11-6 ?, which they both held. Mara came in a tie for fifth while Sugano placed eighth.
Also competing on the day was the women's distance medley relay - composed of senior Maggie Guiney (Middletown, N.J.) and juniors Jennifer Vendetti (Franklin, Mass.), Jennifer Kramer (Loudonville, N.Y.) and Laura Smith (Holden, Mass.) - which took 14th with an 11:59.19 clocking.
The men's and women's sprint medley relays, men's distance medley relay and women's 4x1,500-meter relay will compete on Friday, April 25.
