
Women's Tennis Wins Fifth Striaght To Close Regular Season

CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - The women's tennis team concluded its regular season Wednesday, April 16 with its fifth win a row, a 6-1 vanquishing of Connecticut at the Flynn Recreation Complex, and now awaits its seed for the upcoming BIG EAST Championships, held April 25-27 at the Neil Schiff Tennis Complex in Coral Gables, Fla.
The Eagles (12-7, 6-2 BIG EAST) won five-of-six singles matches and two-of-three doubles matches in claiming victory.
At No. 1 singles, freshman Szilvia Szegedi (Dumakeszi, Hungary) shut out Trinell Russel, 6-0, 6-0. Sophomore Nida Waseem (Karachi, Pakistan) handled Whitney Simcik, 7-5, 6-1, at No. 2, while sophomore Morgan Landes (Huron, Ohio) defeated Barbara Schumsky at No. 3, 6-3, 6-4.
Junior Emily Hellberg (Spring Lake, Mich.) breezed past Jen LoRusso, 6-0, 6-1, at No. 4. At No. 5, senior co-captain Anisha Fernando (Lake Oswego, Ore.) had a fairly easy time with April Dixon, taking the match 6-1, 6-3.
Hellberg and Waseem teamed up at No. 1 doubles to beat Simcik and Russell, 8-2, while Szegedi and junior Allison Ashley (Chestnut Hill, Mass.) doubled up Dixon and Colleen Connors, 8-4, at No. 2.
With the loss, Connecticut drops to 11-8 overall, 4-5 in the conference.
