CHESTNUT HILL, MASS. - The Mercian Cup Collegiate Spring League began its second year with the return of the Midwest Series and the addition of a new Northeast Series. Boston College served as one of the northeast area hosts and won the tournament on April 26.
The Mercian Cup Collegiate Spring League was designed to allow college teams to train in a truly competitive off-season environment. The teams benefit from real-game coaching and real-game play, developing the desire and spirit to win and compete as a team.
The Midwest competition saw the return of all six teams from the 2002 league and was played March 9 at Kent State. The inaugural Northeast Series began on April 6 and will run through April 26, when the action will be hosted by Boston College.
After three weekends of play, the Eagles won the event with a 4-1-1 record. BC beat Boston University (4-0), New Hampshire (5-1), and Providence (5-1) while tying Northeastern (4-4). The lone Eagle loss (a 3-1 decision to Connecticut) was avenged in the championship game with a 2-1 victory.
