CHESNUT HILL, Mass. - For the second time in two games, the Boston College women's lacrosse team (1-2, 0-1 BIG EAST) fell just one goal short of its opponent. Despite five goals from Carley St. Lucia and four from Susie Breaznell, the Eagles dropped the 13-12 decision to the University of Notre Dame (2-1, 1-0 BIG EAST) on Saturday morning in Alumni Stadium.
Notre Dame got off to a quick start, scoring four goals in the first five minutes of play. Boston College cut the deficit in half, with back-to-back unassisted goals from St. Lucia and Breaznell at 22:57 and 21:43 of the first half. Sandwiched between two Notre Dame tallies, Caitlin Bracken earned her second goal of the season, before the Eagles set off a three goal scoring streak. Meggie O'Neill earned the first, while St. Lucia scored the next two, to knot the game at six.
Notre Dame took the momentum from the home team, scoring three to close the half, and posting the first tally of the second frame, before the Eagles launched another three goal attack to pull within one. The Fighting Irish pushed the lead to 12-9, but BC managed to tie the game with 3:27 remaining after yet another three-goal scoring spree, fueled by St. Lucia and Breaznell. The Eagles had good opportunities down the stretch, but Danielle Sheaver, who led ND with six points, earned the gamewinner at 2:44, and Jen White helped preserve the victory in goal.
Michelle Lawson recorded four saves for BC, before being replaced by Tara McKennett, who stopped six Notre Dame attempts.
Today's game was the first BIG EAST Conference contest for both teams. The Eagles will travel to Syracuse, N.Y. for another league match on Friday, March 21.
