CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - Junior Ben Eaves was named the Ice Hockey Collegiate Commissioners' Association (IHCCA) National College Hockey Player of the Month, according to an announcement made by the IHCCA.
Eaves led the Eagles to a 6-2 record in January with an astounding 19 points on eight goals and 11 assists. Ironically, Eaves' immediate future was left uncertain early in the month when he suffered a groin injury as BC fell 3-2 to UMass. Originally slated to miss three-to-four weeks of action, Eaves - and the Eagles - quickly rebounded. He did not miss a game.
The very next weekend, Eaves exploded for eight points (two goals and six assists) in a home-and-home series with UMass Lowell. In Friday's contest, Eaves broke the 100-point mark for his career with one goal and three assists and equalled the output in Saturday's rematch, a 7-1 BC rout of the River Hawks.
Eaves then led the Eagles to a season series sweep of fierce rival Boston University, scoring a goal and an assist in a 3-1 win at BU and then adding another goal in a 3-2 win back at BC. Following a two-goal performance in a 5-3 win at Providence, Eaves saved the best for last with a career high six-point effort (two goals, four assists) in a 9-0 blanking of Massachusetts.
Eaves earned two Hockey East Player of the Week awards in January, and was subsequently selected as the conference's Player of the Month. Eaves has also been selected as a finalist for the 2003 Walter Brown Award, given annually to the best American-born college hockey player in New England.
