PITTSBURGH - Pittsburgh's women's basketball team could not match up with No. 22 Boston College as it fell to the visiting Eagles, 78-52, on Saturday afternoon at the Petersen Events Center. The Panthers (11-13, 3-10 Big East) were outscored 30-20 in the paint and were outrebounded 44-36.
Behind 18 first-half points from Becky Gottstein, Boston College took control of the game early on. Pittsburgh trailed 21-6 at the 11:56 mark of the first half and by 18 points (40-22) right before the break. Gottstein had her way under the hoop as Boston College shot 57 percent (17 of 30) from the field compared to the Panthers' 32 percent (8 of 25) in the first frame.
Pittsburgh cut the lead to 13 points (44-31) on a Laine Selwyn (Coral Springs, Fla./Coral Springs) fastbreak layup with 15:18 remaining, but Boston College steadily upped his advantage to as many as 31 points with three minutes remaining and cruised to their 10th conference victory (18-6, 10-3 Big East).
The Panthers shot just 30 percent (17 of 57) from the field in the game as the Eagles hit 50 percent (29 of 58) of its field goals. Pittsburgh hit just 1-of-10 3-pointers in the contest while Boston College drilled 5-of-11 shots (46 percent) from behind the arc.
Selwyn led the Panthers with her fourth double-double of the season, finishing with 18 points and 10 rebounds. She also added four assists and made 8-of-10 foul shots. Haley Harguth (Beaverton, Ore./Beaverton) pitched in 15 points while making all six of her charity shots.
Gottstein led all scorers with 23 points on 10-of-18 shooting, while Jessalyn Deveny added 20 points and 10 rebounds for the Eagles.
Pittsburgh hits the road for consecutive contests at Notre Dame and Syracuse next week. The Panthers play the Fighting Irish on Wednesday night and continue on to battle the Orangewomen on Saturday, March 1, at 6 p.m. in Manley Field House.
NOTES: Both teams committed 20 turnovers apiece...the Panthers finished with just six assists while Boston College totaled 25...Pittsburgh hit 17-of-22 foul shots (77 percent), but the Eagles struggled from the line making just 50 percent (15 of 30).
