Women's Track Places Sixth, Men Eighth At Husky Invitational

BOSTON - The women's track and field team took sixth place while the men finished eighth Friday evening at the Husky Invitational, hosted by Northeastern at the Reggie Lewis Center.
Southern Florida won the women's competition with 110.33 points. The host Huskies claimed the top prize on the men's side with a score of 149.
The only Eagle individual to win an event was junior Jennifer Kramer (Loudonville, N.Y./Colonie Central), who finished first in the 1,000-meter run with a time of 2:54.12. Senior tri-captain Laura Smith (Holden, Mass./Wachusett Regional) was just behind her teammate, crossing the finish line in 2:54.57, good for third place.
The other victory came courtesy of the women's distance medley relay, which clocked a 11:56.10.
For the third time this year, freshman Jessica Fazekas (Duxbury, Mass./Duxbury) set a new school indoor shot put mark. Her toss of 44-8 broke her own BC record by a foot and placed her seventh in the competition.
Sophomore Megan Mara (Avon, Conn./Loomis Chaffee) also established a new school standard, this one in the pole vault. She cleared 11-6, breaking sophomore Saki Sugano's record of 11-4 ?, which she set last season.
Other women with strong showings were senior Maggie Guiney (Middleton, N.J./Middleton South), who placed runner-up in the mile in 4:57.97; senior Jennifer Vendetti (Franklin, Mass./Franklin), who took third in the 500 in 1:16.75; freshman Anne Hessberg (Slingerlands, N.Y./Holy Names), who finished third in the 800 in 2:17.41; and sophomore Maria Cicero (Elmhurst, Ill./York), who captured third in the 3,000, touring the oval in 9:59.03.
Two members of the men's squad took home third-place finishes. They were junior Byron Gartrell (Boston, Mass./Boston College High), in the mile (4:15.98), and senior tri-captain Gabe Verdaguer (Newton, Mass./Newton South), in the long jump (22-3).
The distance medley relay team claimed fourth with a time of 10:29.82.
Two runners came in fifth for the men: junior Keith Normant (Needham, Mass./Boston College High) in the 55 hurdles (8.04) and sophomore John Wynne (Gainesville, Fla./Oak Hall) in the 1,000 (2:34.92).
Both squads take on BU and Providence at the Reggie Lewis Center in their next meets. The women are in action Friday, Feb. 7 at 5 p.m., while the men's competition begins at 4:30 p.m. the next day.
