Somerset, N.J. - Boston College sophomore Kate Taylor (Menomonee Falls, Wisc.) has been named 2003 BIG EAST Goalkeeper of the Year, the conference announced on Friday night at the annual women's soccer championship banquet. She is joined on the All-BIG EAST First Team by senior midfielder Sarah Rahko (Londonderry, N.H.). Sophomore Katie McGregor (Simsbury, Conn.) was named to the all-conference second team and freshmen Heather Ferron (Brookfield, Wisc.) and Mary Schneck (Dix Hills, N.Y.) were named to the All-Rookie team.
Taylor has started all 18 games this season for the Eagles, helping them to a 14-2-2 record, the best in school history. She has made 50 saves on the season and in more than 1,600 minutes, she has posted a goals against average of .613, third-best in the conference. The sophomore has seven shutouts on the season and is the first Boston College player to win the award.
This is Rahko's third straight season on the All-BIG EAST First Team and fourth receiving post-season honors. In 2000, she was named to the second team and was Co-Rookie of the Year. This season, Rahko leads the Eagles with eight assists, to go along with six goals. The midfielder was the only player in the conference this season to record three assists in one game, a feat she accomplished against Holy Cross.
McGregor continues to emerge as one of the top scoring threats in the conference. An All-Rookie Team selection a season ago, she leads the Eagles in goals with 14 and total points with 33. The forward posted two hat tricks this season, one against Wagner and the other against Fairfield. She has twice been named Offensive Player of the Week this season and she is tied for the BIG EAST lead in goals per game with .83 and is second in points per game with 1.83.
Ferron joined Rahko as an inside midfielder this season and has quickly drawn the attention of opposing defenders. Her speed and passing ability allow the Eagles to run much of their offense through her and she has not disappointed, posting seven assists and also adding four goals.
Schneck has been instrumental in generating the Eagle attack from the backfield, as witnessed by her three assists from her outside back position. She also scored the equalizer against Virginia Commonwealth in the closing seconds of regulation to send the game to overtime. The Eagles eventually won, 3-2.
Boston College plays Notre Dame on Friday, November 7 at Rutgers in the semifinals of the BIG EAST Championship. The match begins at 5:00 p.m.
