Needham, Mass. - Boston College sophomore Kristen Madden (Concord, N.H.) was named the BIG EAST Field Hockey Defensive Player of the Year while six other Eagles were honored with a spot on the All-BIG EAST first or second team. The awards were announced Thursday evening and presented at the annual pre-championship banquet. The BIG EAST Field Hockey Championship is set for Nov. 7 and 9 at Boston College's Alumni Stadium in Chestnut Hill, Mass.
Madden claimed the defensive award by anchoring an Eagle defense that posted eight shutouts. She was a crucial part of the BC penalty corner defensive unit. In addition, she chipped in on the offensive end with three goals and six assists for 12 points. In 2002, Madden was an All-BIG EAST second team selection in her sophomore season.
In addition, Boston College was well represented on the All-BIG EAST first and second teams. Along with Madden, senior captains Virginia Drozd (Richmond, Va.) and Kim French (Shrewsbury, Mass.) and sophomore Sara York (Watertown, Mass.) were first team selections. Junior Kerri Doherty (Lynnfield, Mass.), senior Lauren Hill (Bethesda, Md.), and sophomore Bronwen Kelly (Mississauga, Ontario) were all second team selections. Boston College led the All-BIG EAST first and second teams with seven selections.
Connecticut's Lauren Henderson was named Offensive Player of the Year while her coach, Nancy Stevens, claimed Coach of the Year honors. Henderson led the conference in goals (23) and points (48) while Stevens guided Connecticut to a 4-1 league record and was named Coach of the Year for the fifth time.
Maureen Butler of Connecticut was named this year's Goalkeeper of the Year, anchoring a defense that allowed just 0.95 goals per game and registered 10 shutouts.
