Providence, R.I. - For a league-high ninth time, Boston College and Alumni Stadium will serve as host and site of the BIG EAST Field Hockey Championship. The 2003 champion will be decided during the weekend of November 7-9. The four-team field will feature regular season tri-champions Connecticut (15-4/4-1), Villanova (11-6/4-1), and Boston College (13-6/4-1), along with Rutgers (7-12/2-3).
The 2003 championship match-ups will span two days and feature semifinal action at 6:00 p.m. (#1 Connecticut vs. #4 Rutgers) and 8:00 p.m. (#2 Villanova vs. #3 Boston College) on Friday as well as the BIG EAST Championship at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday.
For the first time in BIG EAST history, three teams have been crowned regular season champions. With a three-way share of the title, Connecticut is looking to defend last year's tournament title. The Huskies have won six conference championships, including four of the last five.
Top-seeded Connecticut will face fourth-seeded Rutgers in the first semifinal. Rutgers qualified for its second consecutive conference championship. The Scarlet Knights are making their fourth appearance overall.
No. 2 Villanova will meet No. 3 Boston College in the second semifinal. Both teams are returning to the championship for a second consecutive year. The two teams have faced each other in the semifinals the past two years, with Villanova winning both match-ups. The Eagles won their last BIG EAST Championship in 1997, in a tournament also played in Alumni Stadium. The Wildcats haven't won a conference championship since 1990.
The winner of the BIG EAST Championship receives the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Division I Field Hockey Championship. First and second round games will be held on the campuses of participating institutions November 15-16. The national championship will be hosted by the University of Massachusetts in Amherst, Mass. The semifinals are scheduled for Friday, Nov. 21, with the national championship game on Sunday, Nov. 23.
