Chestnut Hill, Mass. - The Boston College women's soccer team earned a berth in the BIG EAST Championship Semifinals this afternoon, defeating Rutgers by a 2-1 score at Newton Campus Soccer Field. The 20th-ranked Eagles (14-2-2) will take on 2nd-ranked Notre Dame in the semifinals.
In a rainy first half, shots were scarce. Neither team saw a legitimate scoring opportunity until the 20th minute of play, when Rutgers' Kelly Evans scored off an assist from Adrienne Dugandzic, sending the Scarlet Knights out to the 1-0 lead. The Eagles answered less than six minutes later when senior Beth Totman (Rockville Centre, N.Y.) sent a long, low cross through the box to sophomore forward Katie McGregor (Simsbury, Conn.), who beat Rutgers goalkeeper Robyn Jones for her team-leading 14th goal of the season, knotting the score at 1-1.
In the second half, the rain subsided and the game took on a slightly quicker pitch. Each team stepped up their respective attacks, but neither was able to find the goal for almost the entire half. The Eagles finally broke through at 86:20 when Totman teed up a shot from about 30 yards out. The ball tucked itself into the upper corner of the goal, just out of the reach of Jones and the Eagles had a 2-1 advantage. Rutgers got an opportunity in the final minute in traffic around the goal, but no one was able to finish the play and the Eagles held on for the 2-1 win.
Boston College will take on Notre Dame on Friday, November 7 at 5:00 p.m. at Rutgers' Yurcak Field, site of the conference semifinal and championship games. The Eagles and Fighting Irish have not met this season. The Irish advanced by defeating Miami, 2-1 in overtime. On the other side of the bracket, West Virginia defeated St. John's, 2-1 and Villanova topped Connecticut, 1-0. The West Virginia-Villanova game is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. on Friday.
