Chestnut Hill, Mass. - The 19th-ranked Boston College women's soccer team won its fourth straight game today, beating Virginia Tech by a 1-0 score in a physical game at Newton Campus Soccer Field. The Eagles have allowed just two goals in their last six games. Opponents have managed just 14 shots on goal over that stretch. With the win, BC improved its record to 13-2-2 and wrapped up the BIG EAST schedule with a record of 3-2-1 against the Northeast Division of the conference. The Hokies finished their regular season at 9-9-0 (2-4-0 BIG EAST).
The first half saw the Eagles attack early, as has been their custom all season. Their first few shots were off-target but at 15:36, Boston College broke through. Sophomore Katie McGregor (Simsbury, Conn.) led senior Sarah Rahko (Londonderry, N.H.) who took one dribble and buried the ball in the goal to give the Eagles the 1-0 advantage. Later in the half, on separate plays, a player from each team was issued a yellow card for aggressive challenges.
Boston College continued its offensive pressure in the second half, banging out nine shots, but was unable to add an insurance goal. Freshman Molly Dane (Acton, Mass.) made an impressive run midway through the half, single-handedly beating several defenders, but had her shot stopped by Virginia Tech keeper Mallory Soldner. Still, the Eagle defense remained solid, holding the Hokies to just one shot on goal in the game as BC held on for the 1-0 win.
Sophomore goalkeeper Kate Taylor (Menomonee Falls, Wis.) had to make just one save, while Soldner made six for the Hokies. BC outshot Virginia Tech, 17-4 and earned seven corner kicks to three for the Hokies.
The Eagles will wrap up the regular season on Wednesday night at 7:00 p.m. when the Brown Bears visit Newton Campus Field. Pre-game activities will include a tribute to the squad's five seniors.
