FLUSHING MEADOWS, N.Y. - Despite the absence of its top singles player due to injury, the Boston College women's tennis team is 17-11 through two days of play at the USTA Invitational held at the National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows, N.Y. Junior Morgan Landes (Huron, Ohio) and freshman Lindsey Nash (San Diego, Calif.) each are 5-1 through day two.
The field includes players from sixteen different schools from across the country. Boston College has received solid contributions from a host of different players. In "Flight A" singles, Nida Waseem (Karachi, Pakistan) went 2-1 defeating opponents Perrthi Mankundan of Harvard and Sarah Foster of Kentucky.
Senior Emily Hellberg (Spring Lake, Minn.) defeated Aimee Charest of BU before falling to Sara Schiffman of UPenn. She then defeated Sara Spence of Penn State to go 2-1 competing in "Flight C" singles.
Nash and Landes went 2-1 in singles play and paired to go 3-0 in "Flight B" doubles competition. The tandem defeated opponents from Columbia, Boston University and the University of Pennsylvania. They will play for the "Flight B" doubles title tomorrow.
Junior Amy Molden (El Cajon, Calif.) was forced to withdraw from the tournament after her first round win due to injury. The Eagles are also without their talented sophomore and top singles player Szilvia Szegedi (Dumakeszi, Hungary) who was forced out of the tournament due to an injury sustained last weekend during the Brown Invitational.
Boston College continues tournament play in Flushing Meadows tomorrow.
