LOWELL, Mass. - Junior Ben Eaves tallied a game-high four points to lead Boston College (12-5-3, 8-3-1 HEA) to a 7-1 victory over UMass Lowell (8-12-1, 1-10-0 HEA), Saturday night in front of 4,637 at Tsongas Arena.
One night after Eaves reached a historic milestone breaking the 100-point barrier, coach Jerry York reached a milestone of his own, moving into sole possession of fifth place on the winningest coaches in NCAA history list with 656 career wins.
After surrendering the first goal of the game to the River Hawks, the Eagles evened the score at 1-1 on a Ty Hennes goal with only 1:15 remaining in the first period. Hennes intercepted a pass in the Lowell zone and beat goalie Dominic Smart for his sixth tally of the season.
With the Eagles on a 5-on-3 advantage, Eaves gave BC its first lead of the night on his ninth goal of the season, with assists to junior J.D. Forrest and sophomore Andrew Alberts.
Up 5-on-3 again, Alberts gave BC a 3-1 lead on a powerful slap-shot just inside the blue line at 7:28 of the second period, just 33 seconds after Eaves' tally. Alberts' fifth goal of the season was assisted by Forrest and Eaves.
The Eagles pulled away with three goals in a span of 1:30, starting with sophomore Ryan Shannon connecting on a give-and-go with Eaves on the power play for his eight goal of the season at 11:25.
Brett Peterson gave BC a 5-1 lead at 12:17 of the second period on his fourth goal of the season. Junior Justin Dziama dug the puck out of the corner and fed Peterson at the point who fired a shot on net for the goal.
Junior Tony Voce got involved in the scoring on a shorthanded tally at 12:55 of the second period. Voce received a pass from Eaves and streaked into the UMass Lowell zone on a breakaway.
BC's five second period goals all game within a six-minute span. The last time the Eagles scored five goals in a period was on Oct. 10, 2002, in a 8-6 win over Vermont.
Dziama notched his third goal of the season to give BC a 7-1 advantage at 1:21 of the third period. Dziama took a pass from Hennes in the UML zone and one-timed the puck into the net.
Eaves' four point night gives him 12 points - four goals and eight assists - in only five games against the River Hawks. Forrest has also enjoyed success against UML with 13 points - three goals and 10 assists - in nine games against Lowell.
Tonight's win gives BC a sweep in the season series against Lowell, the fifth time in six seasons the Eagles have done so. Boston College has won 18 of the last 21 meetings against UML.
The Eagles return to action Thursday, January 16, when they travel down Commonwealth Ave. to face rival Boston University. The game, which will air live on Fox Sports New England, begins at 7 p.m.
