CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - Boston College (7-9) suffered its ninth loss of the season as Virginia Tech squeaked by the Eagles three games to two today in Chestnut Hill. The defeat marks the fourth straight and second conference loss for Boston College.
Errant attack attempts and passing by the Eagles helped Tech to a 21-12 lead in the first game. Credit Virginia Tech for earning points after long, intense rallies on crafty dumps and well placed hits. Virginia Tech played aggressively to take game one 30-15.
The second game began with a 6-2 Boston College lead, but resembled a seesaw as the Hokies tied it up and traded points with the Eagles. The home team gained a mid-game lead as the Eagles' sophomore squad of Dara Blandino, Katie Andersen and Jessica Brizzolara dominated play. Andersen served three aces in a row to gain a 23-19 advantage. Senior Rachel Bach drove the ball home to secure the game down the stretch for the Eagles, bringing the final score to 30-23.
Game three was an even battle to the 17 point mark, but Boston College managed to take the lead on three straight points, 20-17. Virginia Tech came out of a time-out swinging hard to tie the game again, at 23. The Eagles won three consecutive long rallies for points, and did not look back, earning a 2-1 lead with the 30-25 victory.
After the break, Boston College had momentum on their side and stormed out to a commanding 9-2 lead, until Virginia Tech's Ana Lang drilled two straight points. The Eagles managed to stay the Hokie comeback, maintaining at least a four-point lead through the majority of the game. Trouble arose for the Eagles as they saw the lead shrivel to 21-20. Determined to win, BC scored four points in a row, but immediately let the Hokies back in to gain their first advantage of the game, 26-25. The teams traded points again until Tech broke lose, winning 30-28 to force a tie breaking fifth game.
The deciding game was even to the eight-point mark when Blandino, Brizzolara and Bach nailed consecutive kills to put the Eagles on top. Once again, the Hokies fought back and tied the score at 11, 12 and 13. The Eagles froze at 13, as they fell to the Hokies 13-15.
Andersen recorded a kill-dig double double for the Eagles, and senior libero Lauren Schwer recorded 16 digs. For the Hokies, Lang and Annie Spicer each achieved the double double.
