WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - Sophomore Amy Molden (El Cajon, Ca./Univ. of San Diego HS) advanced to the finals match in the "Green" Flight consolation bracket, senior co-captain Jessica Engel (Wellesley, Mass./Dana Hall School) lost her second heartbreaker in as many days and the Boston College women's tennis team picked up three more wins on the second day of competition Saturday at the William & Mary Invitational.
Molden breezed past Minnesota's Michaela Havelkova 6-2, 6-1 and will play William & Mary's Megan Muth at 10:30 a.m. tomorrow in the ninth-place match.
After losing a three-setter in her second match yesterday, Engel continued to play the most exciting tennis of any Eagle at the tournament as she lost another agonizingly close match Saturday. This one, a 7-5, 4-6, 7-6(7) defeat, came at the hands of Richmond's Courtney Klein. She takes on the Gophers' Kandis Batiste at 9 a.m. tomorrow in the seventh-place match.
As a doubles team, Molden and Engel lost both of their matches in the "C" Flight on Saturday. They will take the court at noon tomorrow against the team from Minnesota with seventh place on the line.
Following a pair of losses yesterday, sophomore Emily Yeomans (Lafayette, Calif./Carondelet) moved on in the consolation bracket when her opponent, Michigan's Kim Plaushines, defaulted. Yeomans was part of the Eagles' only other win on the day as she and her doubles partner, sophomore Nida Waseem (Karachi, Pakistan/Deerfield [Ill.]), followed up an 8-1 loss to the team from Miami in the "A" Flight with an 8-5 triumph over Richmond's tandem.
Waseem and junior Emily Hellberg (Spring Lake, Mich./Grand Huron) each lost their singles matches Saturday and will play one final consolation match Sunday. Junior Allison Ashley (Chestnut Hill, Mass./Brookline) defaulted in her singles match on Saturday and was eliminated from the "Williams" Flight, while she and Hellberg lost both of their "B" Flight doubles matches and were likewise eliminated.
