CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - Boston College will face 10 teams that qualified for the 2002 NCAA Women's Basketball Tournament. In addition to the those NCAA-experienced teams, the 16-game BIG EAST slate highlights the 2002-03 Boston College women's basketball schedule. The schedule was released today by Boston College director of athletics Gene DeFilippo.
The non-conference schedule is one that will bring both national competition and local rivalry to the table for the Eagles. The home slate is highlighted by tilts with Temple, Harvard, and Colorado State - all NCAA Tournament-qualifying teams. The road slate will take Boston College to Purdue, New Orleans (Tulane, SMU, UNC-Greensboro), and the United States Virgin Islands (Oregon, South Carolina).
After two exhibition games in early November, the Eagles will open their season with a Nov. 24 home game against Siena. They will close out the month of November with games against South Carolina and Oregon as part of the Paradise Jam in the U.S. Virgin Islands.
Boston College will have two home games and two road games in December, highlighted by a Dec. 21 match-up with perennial powerhouse Purdue. The Eagles will participate in the Tulane Invitational Dec. 28-29, facing SMU in the first round and either UNC-Greensboro or Tulane in the second. Boston College's final non-conference game will be a Jan. 11 home tilt with Colorado State.
Boston College's BIG EAST schedule begins with a Jan. 4 date at Providence. The Eagles will play their first home conference game against St. John's on Jan. 8. In addition, they will face Notre Dame (Jan. 29) defending National Champion Connecticut (Feb. 8) and Virginia Tech (Feb. 16) at home. This season, Boston College will play a home-and-home series against Miami, Syracuse and Villanova.
For the second year, the BIG EAST Championship will be held at the Louis Brown Athletic Center on the campus of Rutgers University in Piscataway, NJ. It will be held March 8-11, 2003.
