CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - The Boston College women's soccer team began the 2002 season in winning fashion, shutting out Massachusetts, 1-0, today at Newton Campus Field. The win starts the Eagles off with a 1-0-0 record, while UMass falls to 0-1-0. Today's win is Boston College's first against the Minutewomen in 18 matches.
Sophomore Laina Ceddia, who missed the entire 2001 season with a knee injury, scored the Eagles' lone goal at 68:53. Collecting a pass from Sarah Rahko, Ceddia lifted the ball over UMass goalkeeper Kelly Nigh's head for the tally.
Freshman goalkeeper Kate Taylor made two saves in net for Boston College, collecting the first shutout of her career.
The story of the game for Boston College was offense, as the Eagles registered a remarkable 36 shots. Senior Carolyn Iacobelli and freshman Mary Zider each earned six shots, while freshman Katie McGregor collected five shots in the match.
Kelly Nigh had a busy afternoon in net, making 12 saves for the Minutewomen.
The Eagles return to action on Sunday, Sept. 1, when they face Holy Cross at 2:30.
