Chestnut Hill, MA - Boston College cross country and track & field athlete Katie Ryan (Elmira, NY) was named to the 2002 District I Women's Track & Field/Cross Country Verizon Academic All-District Team, as announced today.
Most recently, Ryan was honored by Boston College as this year's female Eagle of the Year, an award given to one male and one female student-athlete who is an outstanding citizen, scholar, and athlete. It is the most prestigious honor that the BC athletic department bestows on its student-athletes.
Ryan accumulated a long resume of success while at the Heights. In her first year of competition, she ran to a ninth-place finish at the NCAA District I Qualifier and, subsequently, was the eighth freshman to cross the finish line at the NCAA Cross Country Championship.
In her junior year, she finished 24th at the 2000 NCAA Cross Country Championship, leading her team to an overall fourth-place finish. A year later, she was instrumental in giving her team a second top 10 finish. Finishing 39th in the 2001 NCAA Cross Country Championship, Ryan helped the Eagles to a sixth-place mark.
In addition to her cross country success, Ryan was also an accomplished distance runner on the track & field squad. She finished second in the 3,000-meter run at the 2001 ECAC Championship and an 11th-place finish at the subsequent NCAA Indoor Championship. In addition, she ran a leg of the 2001 BIG EAST Champion distance medley relay team.
Ryan is the 2001 recipient of the Aeropostale/BIG EAST Scholar-Athlete and is a two-time All-American and four-time winner of the Athletic Director's Award for Academic Excellence. She graduated Monday with an information systems and mathematics dual degree from the Carroll School of Management.
