CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - The Boston College women's lacrosse team defeated the College of the Holy Cross, 17-9, on Monday evening at Alumni Stadium. BC received five-point efforts from freshmen Susan Breaznell (four goals, one assist), Carley St. Lucia (two goals, three assists), and Courtney Legath (three goals, two assists) and classmate Sara Carpenter made five saves in the win. With the victory, BC's win streak increases to four games and the Eagles move to 7-4 overall on the season. Holy Cross falls to 5-8.
The Crusaders jumped out to the early lead on a free position goal by Erin Rowse at 26:17 of the first half. The lead was short lived, however, as Breaznell scored less than three minutes later to knot the score at 1-1. After the teams traded two goals each, BC took control of the half, scoring four goals in less than four minutes - one a piece from sophomore Meggie O'Neill, senior co-captain Chrissie DeMichele, St. Lucia and Breaznell- to jump out to a 7-3 lead. The Crusaders would cut the lead to three with 3:19 remaining in the half, but the Eagles responded to score two goals in just 25 seconds - one from freshman Jacklyn Yovankin and DeMichele's second of the half- to finish the half with a comfortable 9-4 lead.
Legath started the second half scoring on a free position shot, beating Crusader goalie Kellaigh Malangone with a shot to the top corner of the net. From there, the Eagles would put the match beyond reach, scoring six of the next eight goals - two from senior co-captain Lauren Miller, two from Breaznell, and one each from O'Neill and St. Lucia- to extend their lead to 16-6. Holy Cross turned up the tempo in the final minutes, but would not get any closer than eight goals.
For the game, BC out shot Holy Cross 36-19. Carpenter picked up her fourth consecutive victory in four career starts, while Malangone made 16 saves in the loss.
In addition to the trio of freshmen, the Eagles received multi-point performances from four other players. Miller finished the game with three goals and one assist, O'Neill and DeMichele both tallied two goals and added one assist, Yovankin added a goal and an assist, to go along with four ground balls and a career-high seven draw controls.
