CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - Sophomore Tekae Malandris (Chula Vista, Calif.) earned her first-career BIG EAST Pitcher of the Week honor on April 8, then was later recognized as ECAC Pitcher of the Week, an award that is chosen from most of the Division I conferences in the Eastern United States. In three starts last week, Malandris went 3-0, including the first no-hitter of her career.
In her first game of the weekend - against Villanova on Saturday - she pitched a nine-inning complete game shutout. She struck out 10 batters en route to the win. On Sunday, Malandris pitched both ends of a doubleheader for the first time in her career. The first of the two games - against Rutgers - she tossed a 10-strikeout no-hitter. In the second game, she continued to ho-hit the Scarlet Knights through 6.2 innings and eventually won the 2-1 game in the ninth inning.
Overall on the week, Malandris pitched 25 innings, allowed one run (zero earned), surrendered five hits and struck out 23 batters. BC was 3-1 overall this weekend.
The righthanded pitcher now leads the Eagles in eight categories: earned run average (2.02), wins (nine), appearances (22), complete games (eight), shutouts (five), innings pitched (90.0), strikeouts (93) and opponents' batting average (.193).
In BIG EAST games, Malandris has yet to allow an earned run in four starts and leads the conference in ERA. In 2001, Malandris was a unanimous BIG EAST All-Rookie team selection after posting the second lowest ERA in school history (1.32).
Boston College returns to action on Wednesday, April 10 in a doubleheader at Brown. The Eagles are currently 14-17 on the season and 4-2 in the BIG EAST. The team is 10-2 in its last 12 games.
