Men's Track Competes At Brown Invitational

VIDENCE, R.I. - Members of the Boston College men's outdoor track and field team competed at the Brown Springtime Invitational on Sunday afternoon. The top performance of the afternoon came from sophomore Byron Gartrell (Boston, Mass.), who outran 39 other competitors on his way to a victory in the 1,500-meter run. He finished with the race with a time of 3:55.90.
Freshman Geoff Atkins (Avon, Conn.), who competed at the Penn Relays the day before, placed third in the 200-meter dash with a time of 23.10. Senior James Mann (Sharon, Mass.) placed fifth out of 30 runners in the 800-meter run, as he turned in a time of 1:56.24.
In the 5,000-meter run, junior Matthew Kootman (Middletown, N.J.) had a solid showing with his third-place finish, as he turned in a time of 15:02.70. Senior Steve Lester (Lakewood, Ohio) also competed in the 5,000, as he placed seventh with a time of 15:19.78.
While freshman Trevor Rozier-Byrd (Freehold, N.J.) and junior Brian Mahoney (Weymouth, Mass.) were the only two competitors in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, they both finished with solid times. Rozier-Byrd turned in a time of 9:34.10, while Mahoney completed the race with a time of 9:40.80.
Senior Tony Beirne (Lake Forest, Ill.) competed in the shot put, hammer and discus throws. Beirne placed third in the shot put and hammer competitions, finishing with marks of 45'05.75" and 156'04.00.", respectively. In the discus, he placed seventh with a toss of 134'04.00". Senior Ryan O'Hagen (Sleepy Hollow, N.Y.) finished second in the javelin throw, as he finished with a mark of 151'10.00".
Members of the men's track and field team will be back in action Thursday-Saturday, May 3-5, at the BIG EAST Championships in Storrs, Conn.
