CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - The Boston College women's lacrosse team fell to Rutgers University, 7-5, on Sunday afternoon at Alumni Stadium. For the Eagles, it was their season-high fourth straight loss and third straight in conference. Kate Slotman led the way for Rutgers with three goals and one assist and goalkeeper Lauren Gulotta made 13 saves in net. Freshman Susan Breaznell scored two goals and goalkeeper Michelle Lawson made a career-high 15 saves for BC.
With the loss, the Eagles drop to 7-8 overall and finish the season 1-5 in the BIG EAST. Rutgers improves to 7-7 overall and 2-3 in conference play. The Scarlet Knights have won the last six matches in the all-time series.
Both teams came out playing tenacious defense early on, only one goal was scored by either team in the first 13:32. Senior co-captain Chrissie DeMichele put BC on the board first, with 26:12 remaining, taking a feed from classmate Lauren Miller and firing a shot past Gulotta for the 1-0 lead. Rutgers tied the score a little less than 10 minutes later on a goal from Maggie Bopp.
The Eagles regained their one-goal advantage at the 14:45 mark on Breaznell's first of the game. Christina Curiale knotted the score one minute later on a feed from Cali Wojdyla. Breaznell gave BC the lead, again, less than three minutes later, at 3-2, but Rutgers responded to tie the game with 6:35 remaining in the half.
With time running out in the first stanza, Miller found freshman Courtney Legath in front of the net. Legath shoveled a shot on net that trickled past Gulotta for a 4-3 lead. The Eagles would have a chance to double their advantage but Rutgers' defense stood tough as time ran out in the half.
The Scarlet Knights tied the game for the fourth time at the 26:39 mark of the second frame on Bopp's second goal of the match. The defenses would continue to hold the advantage on the day with neither team scoring a goal for the next 9:51. Freshman Jacklyn Yovankin broke the scoreless streak, causing a Rutgers turnover, racing in alone on net, and firing a shot high past Gulotta for the 5-4 lead. That would be the last shot that BC would get past Gulotta on the afternoon.
With 10:25 remaining in the game, Slotman scored her second goal of the game, an unassisted tally to tie the score at 5-5. Less than two minutes later, she would give her team their first lead of the game, scoring what would turn out to be the game-winning goal on a terrific individual effort. An insurance goal by Claire Grooms at 5:02 would be more than enough for the visitors as Gulotta and the defense snuffed out every BC opportunity.
For the game, Boston College out shot Rutgers 25-24. The Eagles received multi-point efforts from Breaznell and Miller (three assists).
The Eagles will return to action on Friday, April 26 against Albany at Alumni Stadium. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
