Eagles Prepare For 2002 BIG EAST Tennis Championships

PROVIDENCE, RI - The Boston College men's and women's tennis teams will prepare to compete in the 2002 BIG EAST Tennis Championships, held April 19-21 at the Neil Schiff Tennis Complex in Coral Gables, FL. Both Eagles teams made the six-team cut for tournament participation.
The Eagle men's team holds the most number of BIG EAST team championships with 10. Last season, they finished in sixth place with losses to Virginia Tech and St. John's. The women, who also hold the most number of BIG EAST team championships with six, finished fourth in last year's championship. They beat West Virginia while losing to Miami and Virginia Tech.
This season, the Eagle men's team has compiled an overall record of 13-7. They have gone a perfect 6-0 in BIG EAST play. Sophomore Paul Colahan (Beverly, MA) leads the team with a 13-6 individual mark while the doubles tandem of Brad Anderson (Edina, MN) and Justin Slattery (Andover, MA) have gone 14-6 in the number one slot.
The women's team is currently 7-10 overall and 5-1 in the BIG EAST, losing only to perennial power Miami. On the season, Amy Molden (El Cajon, CA) leads the team with a 12-5 individual record while the doubles tandem of Allison Ashley (Chestnut Hill, MA) and Emily Hellberg (Springlake, MI) lead the way with a 9-2 record.
The winners of both tournaments will receive the league's automatic bids to the NCAA Championships. The men's final will be held May 18-27 at Texas A&M University in College Station, TX while the women's finals will be held May 16-25 at Stanford University in Palo Alto, CA.
