Six Wrestlers Compete At C.A.A. Championships

HARRISONBURG, Va. - Six Boston College wrestlers traveled to James Madison University to compete in the 2002 CAA Championships. The Championships were held on March 9th.
Freshman Nate Poole wrestled in the 141 pound bracket and was pinned by Sacred Heart's Thomas Howe at 0:57 in the first round. Poole was then pinned by Binghamton's Gartiser at 5:08 in the consolation round, ending his participation in the event. Mike Payack, in the first round of the 149 pound bracket, was pinned by BU's Jason Holder at 1:34 before falling to Mike Wrinkle in the first consolation round at 3:17. Seniors Evan Williams and Ben Slaughter went 1-1 in the 157 and 165 pound brackets, respectively.
Wrestling particularly well for the Eagles were junior Brad Shemluck (174) and senior Jared McLaughlin (197). Shemluck advanced to the quarterfinals by pinning Wagner's Brad Ditto at 4:14 before being defeated by Drexel's Ben Chunko 11-4. In the consolation brackets, Shemluck advanced to the semi-finals over Sacred Heart's Wayne Oakley and Binghamton's Ryan Jantzen before being defeated by Hofstra's Ralph Everett. McLaughlin advanced to the quarterfinals of the 197 pound bracket, pinning Josh McConnell at 2:11 and falling to Anthony Reynolds (Sacred Heart) at 1:19. McLaughlin pinned Wagner's Dan Rodriguez before being defeated by Steve Kodish (James Madison) in the quarterfinals of the consolation bracket.
The Eagles earned an 11th place finish at the Championships and closed out their season with a 1-16 record (0-6 CAA Record). Boston College's participation in the C.A.A. Championships marks the last of their scheduled commitments for the 2001-2002 season.
