Fencing Participates In IFA Championships

Poughkeepsie, N.Y. - Boston College fencing traveled to Vassar College to compete in the prestigious IFA Championships on March 2nd and 3rd. Over 250 fencers from 14 colleges and universities competed at the event.
Saturday consisted of individual qualifying rounds and team competitions. St. John's University claimed first place in men's and women's sabre, women's foil and men's epee, earning first place overall for the second consecutive year. The University of Pennsylvania took first place in men's foil while Princeton claimed top place in women's epee.
Boston College's men's sabre squad placed 11th of 13 teams on Saturday. Men's foil claimed 9th place and the epee squad pulled in at 13th place. The men's team earned a 10th place finish overall. On the women's side, the sabre squad placed 10th, foil came in at 12th place and the epee squad took 9th place, earning the women's team a 12th place overall finish. In the 6-team final team standings, the Eagles placed 12th with 81 victories out of 225 bouts. They scored 710 touches and received 888.
The second day of fencing saw the top 12 fencers from each weapon category, determined by Saturday's qualifying rounds, face off against each other for individual honors. No Boston College fencers competed in Sunday's events. Top honors in the men's competition went to Ivan Lee (St. John's) in sabre, Jeffrey Breen (UPenn) in foil and Arpad Horvath (St.John's) in epee. On the women's side, the following athletes claimed first place: Julia Gelman (St. John's) in sabre, Kathryn Cavan (Columbia) in foil and Ernese Takacs (St. John's) in epee.
