NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J. - Seniors Nicole Conway (Glenmont, N.Y.), Brianne Stepherson (Middleton, Mass.) and freshman Clare Droesch (Belle Harbor, N.Y.) were honored by the conference Friday evening at the BIG EAST Awards Banquet. The 2002 BIG EAST tournament kicks off Saturday with four first-round games.
The No. 3 seed Boston College women's basketball team will take on the winner of Rutgers (No. 11 seed) and Virginia Tech (No. 6 seed) at 8 p.m. Sunday at the Louis Brown Athletic Center in Piscataway, N.J.
Conway was named honorable mention All-BIG EAST following a strong senior season, which she averaged 9.9 points, 5.4 rebounds, had 76 assists and had a team-leading 55 steals. To go along with her success on the court, Conway was also named the 2001-02 BIG EAST Women's Basketball Scholar-Athlete of the Year. She carries a 3.53 grade point average while being enrolled in the School of Education as an elementary education major.
Stepherson was named to the All-BIG EAST second team following a stellar season for the Eagles. Stepherson, who only played in three games during the 2000-01 season because of muscle strain and weakness in her right knee, rebounded this season to average 10.2 points, 3.0 rebounds, dish out a team-leading 111 assists and have 53 steals.
Droesch capped off a solid freshman campaign for Boston College by being named to the All-BIG EAST rookie team. Droesch and Notre Dame's Jacqueline Batteast were unanimous selections to the team. Droesch finished second on the team in scoring with an average of 10.7 points per game. She finished the regular season with a team leading 44 three pointers. Her best game of the season came against Georgetown back on February 2, which she scored 25 points and had five three pointers.
