Fencing Competes At New England Championships

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Boston College placed third behind MIT and Brown at the 2002 New England Fencing Championships held on Saturday at Brown University. The Eagles placed third in the men's team epee event, third in the women's team event and third in the combined standings.
In weapon squad standings, the women's epee squad went 20-9 for the day and placed first, while women's sabre placed third and women's foil pulled in at fourth place. On the men's side, the men's foil squad went 23-3 to take second place in the rankings. Finally, the men's sabre team placed third while the epee squad placed fourth.
Five men and two women qualified for the individual finals for the Eagles. Paul Taylor went undefeated in the individual round to take the gold medal in foil while teammate Corban Rhodes finished sixth. In sabre, Steve Sztuk placed fourth and Mike Capozzi fifth. Representing the women's team, Tiffany White fought off the flu to take silver medal honors in the epee individual competition while Cecelia Boudreau came in at ninth place.
Freshmen Vanessa Eulo and Maureen Traynor took first and second place, respectively, in the foil competition of the Second String Championship event, an event held for non-starters. In women's epee competition, Sonjah McBain took first place honors and Genevieve Peeples fourth. Alexis Rossi placed seventh in women's sabre while Laura Buckley came in at ninth. On the men's side, Dimi Kotsinonos was second in men's foil. Steve Koza earned a second place finish in men's sabre after fencing a three-way barrage for first place and Chris Bodnar was fourth.
Next weekend both teams will travel to Poughkeepsie to compete in the prestigious IFA Championships.
