UNIONDALE, N.J. - The Boston College women's swimming team wrapped-up competition at the 2002 BIG EAST Championships on Saturday evening at the Nassau County Aquatic Center. The Eagles finished with 98 points, which was good enough for 10th place. The University of Notre Dame went on to win its sixth-consecutive team championship, finishing with a score of 797.
Junior Nicole Duffy (Fairfax, Va.) was the final individual swimmer to compete for the Eagles, as she took part in the grueling 1,650-yard freestyle. Duffy turned in a time of 17:26.09, which is the second-fastest time in Boston College history. Sara Guerena holds the school's fastest time in the event, as she turned in a time of 16:38.43.
Boston College closed out this year's meet by taking part in the 400-yard freestyle relay. The team of Duffy, senior Alexis Kostopoulos (Marblehead, Mass.), junior Nina Suryoutomo (Fremont, Calif.) and freshman Kathleen McCann (Walpole, Mass.) just missed out on a school record in their eighth-place finishing performance. The four finished with a time of 3:30.43, which was only 10 one-hundredths of a second behind the mark set by Kostopoulos, Duffy, Suryoutomo and Caitlin Klick.
The women's and men's swimming and diving teams will wrap up the 2001-02 season Thursday through Saturday, February 28 through March 2, at the Eastern College Athletic Conference Championships.
