SPRINGFIELD, Mass. -- Former Boston College center Jamie Cournoyer ('01) and guard Nicole Conway ('02) will both be part of the 12-woman Springfield Spirit roster, as announced recently by Spirit head coach Eileen Mastrio. Both players made the final cut during national tryouts for the National Women's Basketball League December 7.
The Spirit is one of six teams that are part of the NWBL. The league, in its third year, provides domestic off-season competition for WNBA players and other professional athletes. The Spirit -- which plays its home games at Western New England College, Mohegan Sun, and the Springfield Civic Center - is comprised of local collegiate stars from seven different area universities. Their season runs from late January through mid-April.
Conway finished her BC career as part of the 500-rebound club (533) and was tied for first in all-time games played (121). In addition, she was fifth in steals (149), seventh in three-point field goals attempted (185), seventh in assists (260), ninth in three-point field goals made (60) and 11th in rebounds (533). She was the 2001-02 BIG EAST/Aeropostale Women's Basketball Scholar Athlete of the Year.
While at BC, Cournoyer collected 839 points, 506 rebounds, and 130 blocked shots. She is BC's all-time blocked shots leader, is second in career games played (116), and 12th in rebounding. During her time at the Heights, she was a third team All-BIG EAST selection (2000) and the BIG EAST's Most Improved Player of 2000. She was a member of last year's Spirit roster.
"Nicole was a pleasant surprise," said Mastrio, of tryout day. "She took over her team, she was very vocal and she showed a great repertoire of skills. Jamie played very well. Some of the committee called her 'dominating'."
