Syracuse, N.Y. - Boston College junior Kim French (Shrewsbury, Mass.) was named the BIG EAST Field Hockey Offensive Player of the Year while five other Eagles were honored with a spot on the All-BIG EAST first or second team. The awards were announced Thursday evening and presented at the annual pre-championship banquet. The BIG EAST Field Hockey Championship is set for Nov. 8 and 10 at Syracuse University's Coyne Field in Syracuse, N.Y.
French, a native of Shrewsbury, Mass., claimed the offensive award by leading the Eagles with 23 points. She led BC and was second among all league players with 11 goals. An All-BIG EAST first team honoree in 2001, French helped the 2002 Eagles collect 15 wins, including a school-record 10 shutouts. It marks the second time that a BC player was named the BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Year. Ann Marie Ambrose earned the honor in 1998.
In addition, Boston College was well represented on the All-BIG EAST first and second teams. Along with French, freshman Bronwen Kelly (Mississauga, Ontario) was a first team selection. Senior Christy Zider (Barret, Vt.), junior Virginia Drozd (Richmond, Va.), sophomore Kerri Doherty (Lynnfield, Mass.) and freshman Kristen Madden (Concord, N.H.) were all second team selections. Boston College led the All-BIG EAST first and second teams with six selections.
Connecticut's Lauren Christie was named Defensive Player of the Year while her coach, Nancy Stevens, claimed Coach of the Year honors. Christie helped Connecticut post six shutouts in the regular season, allowing only two goals in BIG EAST play. Stevens guided Connecticut to a 5-0 league record and was named Coach of the Year for the fourth time. The Huskies won their sixth BIG EAST regular season crown.
Audrey Latsko of Syracuse was named this year's Goalkeeper of the Year, anchoring a defense that allowed just 1.11 goals per game. She played every minute this season and posted seven shutouts.
