Harrisonburg, Va. - The 15th-ranked Boston College field hockey team lost a slim 2-1 decision to ninth-ranked James Madison Saturday afternoon at Bridgeforth Stadium on the campus of James Madison University. With the loss, the Eagles fall to 14-5 overall while the Dukes improve to 13-6.
Sophomore Veerle Goudswaard scored both James Madison goals in the final five minutes of the first half and were scored within a span of 2:03. On a penalty-corner play, senior Elize van Ballegooie passed to Goudswaard, who shot the ball into the goal from 15 yards out at 30:42. Senior Janelle Perlis was credited with an assist on the second goal, which ricocheted off the side of the goalcage and into the goal at 32:45.
BC battled back to cut the lead to one with a goal early in the second half. A pass from junior Virginia Drozd (Richmond, Va.) was deflected into the goal by junior Kim French (Shrewsbury, Mass.) 5:18 into the period.
JMU out-shot BC 7-1 in the first half but only held a 6-4 shot advantage in the second period. Eagle goalkeeper Lauren Hill (Bethesda, Md.) finished with eight saves.
The loss ended a three-game winning streak for Boston College, which wraps up regular-season play against Radford in a noon game Sunday at JMU. The Eagles will then head to Syracuse, N.Y. for the BIG EAST Tournament November 8 and 10.
