ATLANTA, Ga. - Boston College senior point guard Brianne Stepherson (Middleton, Mass.) has been named to the list of 30 preseason candidates for the 2002-03 Naismith College Women's Basketball Player of the Year award, according to a recent announcement by Jackie Bradford, president of the Atlanta Tipoff Club.
Stepherson, a 2001-02 All-BIG EAST second team member, averaged 9.8 points, 3.0 rebounds and 4.0 assists per game last year. She started all 31 games for the Eagles, averaging a team-high 31.0 minutes per contest. Stepherson, who helped her team to an NCAA appearance last year, is making her first appearance on the preseason Naismith list.
Last season's winner was Connecticut's Sue Bird.
Now in its 35th year, the Naismith Awards program honors the outstanding college basketball players in the United States. The awards program was founded by the Atlanta Tipoff Club, an organization dedicated to recognizing the achievements of student-athletes in basketball.
The candidates were selected by a vote of the Board of Selectors comprised of leading basketball coaches, journalists and basketball analysts. For more information on the Naismith awards or for a complete list of all 30 players maybe found at www.naismithawards.com.
