CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - The Boston College swimming season got underway Sunday afternoon at the Flynn Recreation Complex. The women's team was victorious, capturing numerous first-place victories to lead the team to a 218-78 win. The men were not as successful, falling 213-78.
The women's team got off to a strong start, finishing ahead of Seton Hall in the first five events. The 400 medley relay team of Nina Suryoutomo, Holly Boucher, Victoria Thelin and Liz Byron began the meet with a win. Karen Tellekamp took first in the 1000 freestyle. Boston College found success in the pool in the next event, capturing sweeping the 200 freestyle event with Caitlin Healy, Kathleen McCann, and Caitlin Klick finishing consecutively. Nicole Julien dominated the 100 breaststroke and Suryoutomo edged out teammate Byron in the 100 backstroke.
A few Eagles gathered multiple first-place finishes. McCann's efforts in the 200 backstroke and 200 IM and Healy's performance in the 200 and 500 freestyle events were the best in the pool. Suryoutomo was a member of two first-place finishing relay teams and was also successful individually. Overall, the Eagles took first place in each event except for the 200 butterfly. Byron, Boucher, Thelin, Lauren Keibler and Caitlin Healy also individual earned first-place points for the Eagles.
On the diving board, Boston College's Katelyn Cox was first in the one and three meter diving competitions. Keri Rubeis took second in the three-meter and third in the one, while Rhines took second in the one meter diving event.
The men, however, did not achieve the same success. Seton Hall topped the Eagles, finishing first in each race. Tim Tully was the first Boston College swimmer to finish in the 1000 freestyle, the 200 butterfly and the 500 freestyle. He and Matthew Baker earned second place as members of the 400 freestyle relay. Baker, the Eagle captain, was the first BC finisher in the 50 and 100 freestyle events. Junior Andy naumann was also the first Eagle to finish in multiple events.
The Eagles' next competition is Friday, Oct. 25 at Marist College.
