CHESTNUT HILL, MA - In addition to 16 BIG EAST Conference match-ups, two Southeastern Conference schools and a handful of local non-conference opponents highlight the 2001-02 Boston College women's basketball schedule. The schedule was released today by Boston College director of athletics Gene DeFilippo.
The non-conference schedule is one that will bring both national competition and local rivalry to the table for the Eagles. The home slate is highlighted by tilts with Arkansas, Tennessee, Holy Cross, Quinnipiac, and Northeastern while the road slate will take Boston College to Fairfield, St. Joseph's, Buffalo, Oakland (MI), and Miami for an appearance in Florida International University's Fun & Sun Classic.
"I'm very excited about our schedule," says Boston College Head Coach Cathy Inglese. "The BIG EAST is always a demanding schedule and we also have quality teams coming into Conte Forum including Arkansas, Tennessee, and several teams that will add local flavor."
After an exhibition game in November, the Eagles will open their season with a Nov. 16 game that will open Fairfield's Bridgeport Arena. They will close out the month of November with their home opener against Southeastern Conference member Arkansas (Nov. 20) and another home game with defending Patriot League Champion Holy Cross (Nov. 26).
Boston College will open its home December schedule with six-time National Champion Tennessee on the 5th. The team will also play two games in Florida International's Sun & Fun Classic on Dec. 28-29. In addition to the host school and the Eagles, the tournament will feature Ball State and Alabama-Birmingham.
Boston College's BIG EAST schedule begins with a Jan. 2 home date with St. John's. The Eagles will play defending National Champion Notre Dame (Feb. 10) and two-time National Champion Connecticut (Jan. 26) on the road. Rutgers will come to Conte Forum Jan. 19. This season, Boston College will play a home-and-home against Pittsburgh, West Virginia, and Miami.
The BIG EAST Championship will be held March 3-5, 2002 at the Louis Brown Athletic Center on the campus of Rutgers University in Piscataway, NJ.
