To start off, I can't believe I am going into my senior year in college. It feels like just yesterday that I was a nervous freshman coming into preseason. Well, my roles have truly changed from 3 years ago. As underclassmen, we always looked to our seniors as role models and people we could easily talk to about anything. Well, now we are those seniors. We have now jumped into the shoes where we provide guidance and positive leadership for the underclassmen.
Enough about being shocked that I am a senior. I want to talk about what our team has been through for past few weeks.
Preseason began on August 17th with a team cookout at 1:00. For the returning players the cookout was a reunion of best friends. On the other hand, whether they realized it or not, the freshmen were meeting people whom will most likely be life-long friends. While all of this socializing was going on, there was a common thought that lingered in every player's head. This thought was the fear of the fitness test. Every year Coach has the team run a fitness test to make sure we are prepared physically and mentally. Once the fitness test is over, the team usually looks forward to preseason.
Preseason consisted of a week of 2 practices per day. Morning practices were more skill related, while afternoon practices focused on fundamentals. I will have to admit that I have never been so sore after the first 3 days, as I was this year. Every single player on the team pushed themselves to their limit every practice. We all know that the harder you work in preseason, the better off you will be when the season starts. The most devastating moment during preseason was when Laina Ceddia (an incoming freshman who was a high school All-American last year) found out that she had torn her ACL. Laina has had a very positive attitude about the situation and believe me, this will only make her a stronger person. I told her, "these things happen for a reason, and they only happen to the best of us."
This past weekend our team traveled to Connecticut to scrimmage Southern Connecticut and Yale. We were all very ready to play against players other than ourselves. The scrimmages went really well, with a 5-0 victory over Southern and a 3-2 victory over Yale. There wasn't a single player on our team who didn't play well. Following the scrimmages, we went to Rachel Parri's house on the ocean. This trip to the Parri's has become a popular tradition with our team.
Now we are focusing on our first game, which is Saturday night against UMASS -Amherst. I can't wait to actually play our first game. The team this year has so much talent in every position. We have the ability to have the best BC women's soccer team ever. We simply look to take our season one game at a time.
