Eagles Honored At All-Sports Banquet

CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - Amber Jacobs, a guard on the women' basketball team, was chosen as the Outstanding Female Freshman Scholar-Athlete at the school's All-Sports Banquet held on the floor of Conte Forum on Tuesday, May 1. Three other members of the team were also honored at the annual celebration of team and individual accomplishment in the Boston College athletic department.
Jacobs, an secondary education major in the Lynch School of Education, was selected by the Learning Resources for Student-Athletes staff as the female freshman athlete who most successfully combined academics and athletics this season and reached success in both areas. Chuck Kobasew of the men's ice hockey team was the Outstanding Male Freshman Scholar-Athlete.
Junior forward Becky Gottstein, the team's leading scorer and rebounder during the 2000-2001 season, was honored with the team's Leadership Award. She missed five games during the season due to various injuries, but still earned a spot on the All-BIG EAST second team and was a two-time BIG EAST Player of the Week.
Center Jamie Cournoyer was honored with the team's Outstanding Senior Award. This season, Cournoyer played in all 29 games, starting 27, and recorded 8.4 points per game and 5.9 rebounds per game. A team co-captain, Cournoyer was the BIG EAST's Most Improved Player for the 1999-2000 season. She finished her four-year career as the team's career leader in blocked shots with 130.
Junior wing Nicole Conway, an elementary education and math/computer science double major in the Lynch School of Education, received the Barbara F. McManama Scholarship for leadership both on and off the basketball court. Last season, Conway had a career year, averaging 8.6 points per game and 6.6 rebounds per game.
