Wrestling Competes At ECWA Championship

BINGHAMTON, N.Y. - The Boston College wrestling team competed at the East Coast Wrestling Association Championship Tournament, held March 3 -4 at Binghamton University in Binghamton, N.Y. Taking first place in the heavyweight, Antonio Garay won all of his bouts by fall. The Eagles took a sixth place overall finish, out of eight teams.
Ranked fourth in the nation by the March 6 InterMat's NCAA Division I Wrestling Rankings, Garay was seated first in the heavyweight. In the quarterfinals, Garay defeated Wagner's Bruno Fizzo in 0:20. In the semifinals Garay defeated Boston University's Edward Strauss in 4:45. To win the championship, Garay defeated number two Mike Carroll from Drexel in 1:52. With the win in the heavyweight, Garay received an automatic bid to the NCAA Championships to be held on March 15-17 at the University of Iowa. Last year Garay finished fourth overall at the NCAA Championship and earned All-American honors.
In the 133-pound weight class, Ricky Meritt lost a 10-0 decision to Sacred Hearts Jason Cucolo. In the consolation round, Meritt fell to Drexel's Heverly in a 6-1 decision. Steve Pregiato won is first match in the 141-weight class when he won a decision 11-3 over Christian Ewing of Wagner. In the semifinals, Pregiato fell in a 12-1 decision to Mike Settembrino of Seton Hall. In the consolation round, Pregeaton defeated Greg Ruggier, 2-1 and fell to Rider's Harris after 6:09.
Defeated twice in the 149-weight class, Peter Tarricone first fell to Tider's Nick Harrington in 1:20 and then to Seton Halls Beau Bruno in an 8-4 decision in the consolation round. In the 157-class, Eric Williams was defeated by Cory DeBias from Rider. In the consolation round, Leet Brady forfeited giving William's the win before he finally fell to Boston University's Jason Holder in an 11-2 decision.
Marty Black, competing in the 165-pound weight class, was defeated by Boston University's Zachary Emond in a 12-0 decision. Then he fell to Seton Hall's Terry Madden in 2:29. In the 174 Seton Hall's Everett Bell defeated Dan Degan in a 4-2 decision. In the consolation round, Degan won a 7-4 decision over Steve Forrest of Sacred Heart before falling to Rider's Bob Pizzuto in a 2-1 decision.
Losing both his matches in the 182-weight class, Bradley Shemlock fell in 5:52 to Sacred Heart's Shawn Reynolds and then to Ralph Everett in a 6-3 decision. In the 197-class, Jared McLaughlin fell to Fikret Darzanoff of Seton Hall 14-5. In the consolation round, McLaughlin fell 14-8 to Derek Venne of Sacred Heart.
Winning the ECWA Championship was Hofstra.
