WORCESTER, Mass. - Senior goaltender Scott Clemmensen made 29 saves to lead Boston College to a 3-1 victory over HOCKEY EAST rival Maine before a sellout crowd of 11,976 fans in the NCAA Tournament's quarterfinal round in the Centrum. With the victory, the Eagles earned their fourth consecutive berth in the NCAA Tournament's Frozen Four.
Boston College will meet the winner of Sunday's Michigan-St. Cloud State quarterfinal-round game in the tournament's semifinal round. The game will be played on Thursday, April 5 in Pepsi Arena in Albany, N.Y.
Boston College's four consecutive appearances in the Frozen Four marks the ninth time in tournament history that a program has advanced to the semifinal round four straight years. The last team to accomplish the feat was Michigan (1995-98).
Boston College raised its record to 31-8-2, equaling the school's single-season record for wins set by the 1986-87 team. That team finished with a 31-8 mark.
The game was scoreless through two periods, before junior Jeff Giuliano put BC on top 1-0 with a power-play goal at 0:35 of the final period. Seniors Marty Hughes and Bobby Allen assisted on the score.
After Maine (20-12-7) evened the game at 1-1 at 1:41, Boston College regained the lead on freshman Chuck Kobasew's blast from the top of the left face-off circle at 6:15. Sophomore Krys Kolanos and freshman Tony Voce picked up the assists.
Senior Rob Scuderi concluded the scoring with a power-play goal at 17:31. The Eagles applied pressure on Black Bears' goaltender Matt Yeats during a 31-second, two-man advantage, but scored the goal four seconds after Maine gained back one skater. Junior Brooks Orpik and Kolanos assisted on Scuderi's goal.
Clemmensen and Allen gained All-Tournament honors. They were joined on the team by two North Dakota players - Jeff Panzer and Bryan Lundbohm - and two Maine players - Michael Schutte and Doug Janik.
