Taylor, Lennox Await Invitations To NCAA Fencing Championships

CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - Boston College hosted the NCAA NortheastRegional Tournament on Sunday, March 11, 2001 at the Flynn Recreational Complex. Boston College fencers Regina Lennox and Paul Taylor will be recommended for selection to the NCAA Fencing Championships by the Northeast Regional Committee based on their dual meet records and their final placement in Sunday's tournament. Senior Regina Lennox placed 4th in women's epee while Freshman Paul Taylor was 9th in men's foil, earning them both a recommendation.
Lennox started her fencing career as a walk-on with no prior fencing experience. Taylor fenced for four years at the Calilburn Fencing Club in Milwaukee, WI, before coming to Boston College. Both are members of the Presidential Scholars Program.
Junior Steve Sztuk placed 11th in the men's sabre competition, while teammates Tom Leeand Mike Capozzi placed 18th and 19th, respectively. There were 23 competitors in the men's sabre event. Also performing well in men's foil was senior Greg Shea, who placed 15th and freshman Corbin Rhodes, placing 20th. The men's foil competition consisted of a field of 24. In men's epee, amidst a field of 26 competitors, senior Zakee Howard finished 13th while Jeff Marston pulled in at 19th and sophomore Dave Moyston placed 22nd.

On the women's side, the sabre competition consisted of a field of 35 fencers. For Boston College, Cece Boudreau placed 22nd. Jessica Peakes and Becky King placed 28th and 30th, respectively, in this event as well. In foil competition, Biffy Lennox placed 13th, Sue Boyle came in at 18th and Allison Maher placed 25th. There 39 women foilist competitors. Finally, in epee, sophomore Kate Boyle took 15th place and Gina Koufos placed 22nd, both out of a field of 43.
Winning the men's events were the following: Yale's Sada Jacabson (Sabre), Colorado's Erin Smart (Foil), and St. John's Arlene Stevens (Epee).
Another season has come to an end for many of Boston College's fencers while Taylor and Lennox await confirmation of their recommendation by the National Committee. The Committee is expected to announc their decision on Thursday, Match 15, 2001. The Championships will be held March 22-25 in Kenosha, WI.
