Softball Splits In San Diego

SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The Boston College softball team split its two games in the second day of the Torero Invitational at the University of San Diego. In the first game of the day, the Eagles fell 3-1 to Northern Iowa and then defeated San Diego 14-0 in the nightcap.
Both BC errors led to the Northern Iowa runs in the first game. The team posted one run in the first inning, but the Eagles came back to tie the game in the bottom of he third. NIU brought two more home in the next inning and went on to the two-run win. Jacqui Goodchild went 1-for-3, while both Erin Mackey and Cara Blumfield went 1-for-2. Tekae Malandris struck out seven in 3.2 innings of relief.
In the second game, two pitchers combined for the shutout of the Toreros. Kimberly Ryan struck out six in four innings of work, while Mackie sent two back to the dugout in the 14-0 win. The game was shortened to five innings. Alison Erbig went 3-for-3 with two RBI and four runs scored as the lead-off hitter. Goodchild also was perfect at the plate, going 3-for-3 and scoring two. Nine different Eagles got at least one hit in the game.
BC posted two runs in the first inning and then exploded in the second with eight. BC added two more runs in both the third and fifth innings. All but one of their runs were earned.
BC will face Tulsa on Sunday in the last game of the five-game tournament. The Eagles are 10-9 overall and will return home to Chestnut Hill after the completion of the tournament.
