BOSTON, Mass. - Senior forward Brian Gionta scored one goal and two assists and freshman Ben Eaves added two assists to pace Boston College to a 4-1 victory in the first round of the 49th Annual Beanpot Tournament at the FleetCenter.
Gionta scored his 24th goal of the season 4:23 into the game to give BC an early 1-0 lead. The Eagles outshot the Crimson 11-3 in the period.
BC took advantage of the power play, scoring on its first two opportunities, the first coming at 16:37 of the first period when freshman forward Chuck Kobasew beat Harvard goalie Oliver Jonas on a pass from senior defenseman Rob Scuderi. Junior defenseman Brooks Orpik also assisted on the goal, which pushed BC's lead to 2-0.
Senior forward Marty Hughes scored on the Eagles' second power play chance, skating down the left side of the zone before firing a shot that found the back of the net and extended BC's lead to 3-0 just 47 seconds into the second period. Gionta and Eaves assisted on the goal.
Boston College finished the game two-for-five on the power play. The Eagles' penalty kill finished five-for-five.
Freshman forward Tony Voce gave the Eagles a 4-0 lead at the 6:16 mark of the third period. Gionta and Eaves again provided the assists on the goal.
Harvard (10-10-1, 9-5-1 ECAC) brought BC goalie Scott Clemmensen's shutout bid to an end at 9:38 of the final period. Freshman forward Kenny Turano netted his fifth goal of the season to cut BC's lead to 4-1.
Clemmensen made 19 saves for his sixth consecutive victory, and fourth career Beanpot win. The Crimson's Jonas stopped 26 shots in defeat.
Boston College (21-6-1, 13-3-1 HOCKEY EAST) advances to the Beanpot Championship game at 8:00 on Monday, Feb. 12, against the winner of the Boston University-Northeastern game. The Eagles next play on Friday, Feb. 9, as they attempt to sweep the Providence Friars for the first time since the 1987-88 season. Game time at Providence's Schneider Arena is 7 p.m.
