Women's Basketball Upends Virginia Tech In Overtime

BLACKSBURG, Va. - The Boston College women's basketball team won its second game in a row, defeating Virginia Tech, 65-59, in overtime at Cassell Colisium in front of 4,430 fans. Four Eagles scored in double figures as BC played its third overtime contest of the season and won its first overtime game since the 1998-99 season.
BC jumped out to a 19-3 lead halfway through the first half as Becky Gottstein keyed the run with 10 of her 14 points on the day. The Hokies responded and started playing tough defense and, by the half, were able to whittle the BC lead to only four points, 28-24.
In the second half, Virginia Tech cam out strong and with four minutes gone, tied the game, 33-33, when Tere Williams converted a three-point play. The Eagles regained the advantage and were able to extend a four-point lead on another Gottstein layup.
The two teams traded baskets and with 8:26 remaining, the Hokies took a three-point lead as Williams netted a layup. BC went on a 7-1 run keyed by five Alicia Shields points with 4:56 to play. Ieva Kublina made two free throws for Virginia Tech to bring the score within one, but then Shields converted her free throw to take a two point lead. With :28 left, Christina Strother put in a layup that tied the score and sent the game into overtime.
In the extra session, Nicole Conway scored six points, including two fast break layups, to lead the Eagles to the win.
Gottstein scored 16 to lead the Eagles, while Shields netted 14. Conway scored 13 and Jamie Cournoyer 12. Gottstein and Cournoyer each grabbed eight rebounds. Williams led all scorers with 18 points before leaving the game late in the second half with a knee sprain. Sarah Hicks scored 15 for the Hokies, while Amy Wetzal and Chrystal Starling scored 10 each. Kublina and Hicks each grabbed nine rebounds.
BC improved to 10-14 overall and 4-9 in BIG EAST play. Virginia Tech fell to 17-7 overall and 8-5 in league games.
Boston College will next play Georgetown on Wednesday, Feb. 21, in a 7 p.m. game at Conte Forum.
