Swimming And Diving Competes At BIG EAST

CHESTNUT HILL Mass.- The Boston College women and men's swimming and diving teams competed in day one of the BIG EAST Championships on Thursday, Feb. 15 at the Goodwill Games Swimming Center in Hempstead, N.Y. After one day of combination the women's team sits in 10th place and the men's team is in 13th, both out of 13 teams.
Taking eighth place in the 200 freestyle relay, Nina Suryoutomo, Alexis Kostopouos, Caitlin Klick and Nicole Duffy swam a 1:36.91, setting a new school record. In the 200 individual medley Lauren Schwartz finished in 31st and Brianne Sullivan followed in 41st. In the 50 freestyle, Kostopoulos swam a 23.98 in the preliminary race for 12th place and in the final, she swam a 24.01 for 16th place. Suryoutomo finished in 17th in the 50 freestyle.
Matt Baker, Andy Naumann, Nick Riolo and Marc Mangello finished in 12th place in the 200 freestyle relay with a time of 1:29.56. In the men's 50 freestyle event, Baker took 28th with a time of 21.52. Taking 13th place in the 400-medley relay, Naumann, Manganiello, Riolo and Baker swam a 3:38.95
In diving, Mike Wilt took 11th place out of 19 divers in the one-meter event. On the women's side, Kristen Gray finished in 17th place in the women's three-meter diving event.
The second day of competition of the BIG EAST Championship will be on Friday, February 16, 2001 at the Goodwill Games Swimming Center in Hempstead, N.Y. Preliminary action will begin at 10:30 a.m. and the finals will start at 6:30 p.m.
